Sept. 2022 - Fall is for Trees!

PVCA helped to plan, source plants, and weed the new pollinator gardens at the Belmont Hills Library. Ecologically beneficial native plantings replace the prior non-native species. Butterflies and bees now regularly visit the gardens to the delight of all! Children studied the gardens as part of the Science in the Summer programs of the Franklin Institute, and Ms. Gwen often coordinates outdoor reading time with themes on the natural world. Thank you Ms. Gwen! The pink-flowering species here is swamp milkweed—a favorite and necessary food of monarch butterflies who successful reproduced in the gardens this summer 2022.

Members discussed tree planting in the business district on Montgomery Ave. tonight. Fall is a great time to plant a tree. If you would like to request that a tree be planted in the right-of-way of your property, see this Township link with info on how to contact the TS arborist. We encourage you to request native species with inherently special ecological value.

Volunteers have diligently weeded the new pollinator gardens at the Belmont Hills Library through summer and were rewarded with visits from monarch butterflies and many native bee species. PVCA contributions helped in part to make these plantings possible. Thanks to Belmont Hills volunteers Eurhi Jones and Christiane Wuerzinger and our wonderful librarians, Lizzie Barrie and Ms. Gwen for their support!
